A Brief History of The Sisters Of Providence In Africa

The Sisters of Providence (Rosminian Sisters) arrived in Tanga, Tanzania on 24th July 1954, when we responded to the call from the then Bishop of Tanga, Bishop Arthurs, to answer an immediate urgent need for teachers and nurses in the Tanga Region of Tanzania at that time. The Sisters arrived from Europe (United Kingdom, Ireland and Italy) to take on the task and were most warmly welcomed. The Sisters have dedicated themselves in serving all people in following Christ through the three forms of Charity: temporal charity, spiritual charity and intellectual charity. The sisters are ready to work wherever these services are required.

The Congregation has grown substantially in Tanzania since our first arrival and we now have 40 professed sisters and 33 junior sisters. We are present in 10 communities across the country, offering services in education, healthcare, and pastoral ministry. Our Sisters receive appropriate education before they take on the role of helping others.  At present we have Sisters training for different apostolates such as:

  • Montessori Education

  • Primary Education

  •  Certification in Early Childhood Education

  •  Nurses

  • Medical Assistants

  • Pharmacists

  • Laboratory technicians

  • Catechists & Religion teachers

  • Accountants

  • Office  Secretaries

  • Agriculture

The pelican, who nourishes its little ones with its own blood, is a symbol of love, which reaches the point of self-sacrifice with the gift of life.

Jesus is the “good pelican“, who in the Eucharist expresses to us all his love, giving body and blood as nourishment for the salvation of all.

For Rosminians it is a sign of full consecration to Love, expressed in the relationship of intimate communion with Christ and in generous service to our brothers and sisters.

"Love is the fulfillment of the law"

“Do not be afraid… From heaven I will help you much better… The Sisters of Providence will flourish in proportion to their fidelity to poverty and simplicity.”

Blessed Antonio Rosmini

"Infinite knowledge is useless if finally it does not help us improve ourselves. Thinking is only the first step to action."
